goAdvocate!

goAdvocate is a nascent nonprofit with the goal of enabling multiple separate online communities to advance knowledge, build community, and advocate.

Various sites on the Internet disseminate information, champion a cause, or promote community. But information not put to a purpose is “knowledge for knowledge's sake.” Purposes are lost without information to drive them forward (or back them up). Individuals are hard-pressed to make differences alone. goAdvocate is about all three; information, purpose, and community.

Although over 60 million people volunteer annually in the United States alone, few collaborative mechanisms exist (especially across small groups lacking institutional support). goAdvocate, a network to enable advocacy, will lend traction to charitably-oriented individuals and groups via technology. By doing so, the reach of charity and advocacy will broaden.

Rich content resides in the library. A paid editor generates a fresh content stream. Permission levels govern submissions by members, to maintain credibility. Member contributors and writers lend expertise to a worthy cause. For passionate persons, what better reason to lend expertise than maintaining advocacy as the primary goal?

Issues and action! sections help members find, develop, and act upon a cause. AdvocateMe! connects volunteers with projects. Community is built via blogs, forums, and groups. A profile section tracks each member’s contributions.

With these features, a community can grow, and build its case for positive change.

Multiple websites are planned; each with a specific focus, yet sharing the same structure. Each site may be tailored to best reflect group interests, and maximize its member’s input. As further sites are constructed, coordination will be centralized at goAdvocate; linking experts and leveraging skill and experience. Global members will be able to explore the open-sourced interface to advance knowledge, build community, and advocate their cause.

When fully implemented, goAdvocate will provide the worldwide community with a new powerful Internet-based tool to advance advocacy. Members will benefit from a new mechanism to enable their volunteerism. Charities and foundations will benefit through collaboration with related Advocacy sites, as well as through financial support from goAdvocate.

Project sustainability will rely on an advertising-based revenue model and direct contributions. Collaboration with disparate foundations, charitable groups, and nonprofits is a priority. Transparency is a guiding principle. Results are to be measured via quantitative evaluation of website traffic, member contributions, formation of groups actively involved in volunteerism, and support of related charities. Additionally, independent yearly qualitative evaluations will include site enhancements, organization and content, and achievement of goals.

goAdvocate is committed to maximizing support for advocacy, and for charities and foundations that promote positive change, without regard to cause. After all… it is discussion that matters as humans blunder toward the answer. Now the Internet has unlimited potential to do good by educating and empowering the world, giving each surfer the opportunity to ride a more perfect wave.
