goAdvocate Privacy Policy

The full contents of the goAdvocate network (including dermAdvocate) privacy policy.

goAdvocate recognizes the importance of privacy.  The following Policy applies to all of the websites within the goAdvocate network.  

goAdvocate adheres to the US safe harbor privacy principles of Notice, Choice, Onward Transfer, Security, Data Integrity, Access and Enforcement, and will be/is registered with the U.S. Dept. of Commerce’s safe harbor program.

Information we collect and how we use it:

goAdvocate asks for personal information when you register, including your email address and a password.  This is used to confirm your account and protect it from unauthorized access.

Your profile page may contain personal information, such as name, a photo, date of birth, your location, etc.  Personal information may be kept private at the user’s discretion.

Personal information is only used to
  • Provide services to users, including display of customized content and advertising;
  • Internal audit, research and analysis to improve services;
  • Improve technical function; and
  • Develop new services.

We offer a number of services that do not require you to register for an account or provide any personal information to us, such as the contents of goAdvocate.  For members, to provide a range of services, we may collect the following types of information:

  • Information you provide - When you become a goAdvocate account member via registration, you provide personal information (such as your name, email address and account password). 
  • goAdvocate servers automatically record information, such as when you use goAdvocate and the frequency and size of data transfers.  Information displayed or clicked in the goAdvocate interface (including User Interface elements, settings, and other information) is also recorded.
  • goAdvocate cookies - When you visit goAdvocate we send one or more cookies - a small file containing a string of characters - to your computer that uniquely identifies your browser.  Cookies allow improvement and tailoring of service to the individual user.  Browsers usually accept cookies; you can reset your browser to refuse cookies or allow you to accept only certain cookies.  Note; some goAdvocate features and services may not function properly if you disable cookies. 

  • Log information - When you use goAdvocate services, servers automatically record information regarding your browser.  These server logs may include information such as date and time of your web request, IP address, browser type and language, and cookies that may identify your browser. 

  • goAdvocate stores and maintains user account information and copies of user weblog posts and comments, including drafts, in order to provide the service
  • User communications - When you send email or other communication to goAdvocate, we may retain those communications.
  • Links - goAdvocate may present links in a format that enables tracking.  We use this information to improve content and advertising.
  • Other sites - This Privacy Policy applies to web sites and services that are owned and operated by goAdvocate.  We do not control other websites linked to by a goAdvocate site.  Other sites may place cookies or other files on your computer, collect data or solicit personal information from you.  Other site’s privacy policies are in effect while a user is at that site.
Advocate users of dermAdvocate will have their credentials confirmed by administration for purposes of validating their qualifications to add advanced content.

goAdvocate processes personal information on servers located in the State of Colorado, United States of America, and is subject to applicable laws therein.


Choices for personal information
Certain public information (such as member name) will be visible to all users of the goAdvocate network.

When you sign up for a service that requires registration, we ask you to provide personal information.  If we use this information in a manner different than the purpose for which it was collected, then we will ask for your consent prior to such use. 

Members can change their goAdvocate account settings in the Account Settings area.  Members can edit their profile information at any time at Edit Profile, and are able (within limits) to specify what information is private and public.  Non-personally identifying information (such as member name) must remain public.  Members can edit, save drafts and remove weblog posts at any time, as described in goAdvocate help.  Additionally, members may delete their entire profile.


If you delete your profile and discontinue membership, all posts will be removed from public view.  However, copies of your profile information and other information associated with your account may remain on back-up media. 

If we propose to use personal information for purposes other than those described in this Policy and/or in specific service notices, we will offer an effective way for members to opt out of the use of such personal information.  We will not collect or use private information for purposes other than those described in this Policy and/or in the specific service notices, unless we have obtained your prior consent.  Furthermore, goAdvocate will never solicit sensitive personal information.

You can decline to submit personal information (such as email address), in which case goAdvocate may not be able to provide services other than viewing content.  

Information sharing
goAdvocate does not share personal information with other companies or individuals.
We may share with third parties general, non-personal information such as the number of users that read a particular article.  Such information does not identify you individually.

Information security
Security measures are in place to protect against unauthorized access to data or unauthorized alteration, disclosure, or data destruction.  This includes physical security measures to guard against unauthorized access to systems where we store personal data.  Periodically, we will conduct internal review of our data collection, processing, storage and security measures, to ensure the best protection available for the information contained within the site.

Access to personal information is restricted to goAdvocate editors, administrators, and representatives who need to know that information in order to operate, develop, or improve services.  These individuals agree to confidentiality and may be subject to termination and criminal prosecution if they abrogate this agreement.

Data integrity
goAdvocate processes personal information in accordance with this Policy.  We review our data collection, processing, and storage practices to ensure that we only collect, store and process the personal information needed to provide or improve services.  We take steps to ensure that the personal information is accurate, complete, and current, but depend on members to update or correct their personal information when necessary.  goAdvocate cannot necessarily confirm to accuracy of the data thus provided.

Accessing and updating personal information
When you use goAdvocate services, we make good faith efforts to provide you with access to your personal information and all content that you have provided.  Individual members must identify themselves via their username and password.  goAdvocate may decline requests that are unreasonably repetitive or systematic, require disproportionate technical effort, jeopardize others’ privacy, or are impractical (for instance, requests concerning information residing on backup).

Changes to this policy
goAdvocate regularly reviews and edits this Policy.  Therefore, this Privacy Policy may change from time to time.  Changes that are expected to be minor will be posted on this page.  Significant changes will receive prominent placement and notice on a prominent area of the site.  Contact us with proposed changes.
